Imagine...
In the
early stages of what appears to be a very competitive match,
you and your opponent are back on your respective baselines
in a tactical shot-making point when your opponent plays a
very wide angled cross court shot to your backhand...
Your feet
instantly go into a "drop step" footwork pattern, and as you
move efficiently and quickly, you realize that your new
footwork patterns get you to your opponent's shot earlier
than you used to.
You no
longer are stretched out and having to reach for this shot,
but in fact, you arrive early, on balance, and are set up to
drive your backhand back cross court AS you move back
towards the center of the court to show your opponent that
you're back in perfect position to handle their next shot.
As your
opponent was just feeling what a great opportunity they
appeared to have quickly evaporates into a tangible fear
that your footwork is superior to their shot-making skills.
That fear
rapidly translates into lots of unforced errors from your
opponent as they now try to hit winners past you in such a
way that is way out of their shot-making abilities.
This can
happen for you...
Footwork
patterns can be learned. And the benefits of good
tennis footwork skills are:
-
Consistent shot-making because you're more often
properly aligned to the path of the incoming ball.
-
Proper alignment to the path of the incoming ball allows
you to simply "repeat" your shots rather than having to
create on the fly from so many different set up
positions.
-
Faster, earlier, and on balance recovery back to the
middle of your court after your shots which forces your
opponent into thinking they need to do "more" with their
shots.
-
You
cover more court out wide in a way that you feel in
control when your opponent pulls you out of the middle
of your court.
-
You'll align yourself more often to the path of your
opponent's incoming shots so you can move forward
through those shots to challenge your opponents with
superior court positions.
-
Better visual contact with the moving tennis ball.
